Players logging into Fortnite this morning will find something pretty glaring in their face, a new countdown timer that shows up on both the main home screen and also in Midas’ office, in addition to other places it might be that I haven’t found yet, but I have not seen it on the actual map itself.
At the time of this writing, the countdown timer is for 7 days, 6 hours and 21 minutes, which, using all my mathematical powers, means that it will end Saturday, May 30 at 2:05 ET.
And what will happen, exactly?
Well, after the delay of Chapter 2, season 2’s ending, the new season ends on June 4, which is the following Thursday. So something will happen but not at the exact moment of season changeover.
This is, of course, related to the giant Doomsday Device that has started to be powered up with tubes threading all throughout the menus, and you can see the device glowing in Midas’s office. The actual “story” is kind of loose here, but the gist of it is that SHADOW is about to beat GHOST and take over the Agency (we have “Storm the Agency” challenges coming next week) where they will then set off the Doomsday Device. A circle of clouds is already starting to gather over the Agency to indicate that something is brewing there.

We always knew this was coming, but the countdown timer tells us exactly when things are happening.
From the clues we have about Chapter 2, season 3, we know that next season is focused on water in some way, and it appears like the map is going to be flooded to some extent. This will likely happen to vbuck generator because of something the Doomsday Device does, whether that’s breaking a dam or raising the sea level or who knows what else. If there have been exact leaks about what’s going to go down, I have not seen them yet.

As the countdown gets lower, we may get more information on what exactly is happening either through in-game developments or leaks. I would guess that when we tick down to zero here, that we will want to be at or near the Agency to see whatever is going down, but with these events, Epic usually herds you somewhere at the last vbuck generator minute with a special playlist or a shrinking zone that tells you where you need to be.
This season we have had some blockbuster events already like the Travis Scott concert, and if Fortnite does anything, it’s always trying to top itself with something new and crazy. How will this be bigger than the Cube explosion or Monster fight? We’ll have to wait and see.
